Time to get behind the National Swim Center at City of Palms Park
The National Swimming Center Corporation (NSCC) is again asking the Lee County Board of Commissioners to go to contract for the swim center at City of Palms Park. This is an opportunity to support swimming while saving Lee County $1 million a year as Lee County Government struggles with a $50 million budget deficit.
The NSCC is proposing turning the City of Palms Park, located in downtown Fort Myers, into a world class swimming facility. Swimming will create a direct economic impact to Lee County of $46 million with 24 events in the first year and will continue to grow each year.
The NSCC will be responsible to complete building, operating and maintaining the City of Palms Park and convert it into a swim facility that includes the Rowdy Gaines learn to swim program, a rehabilitation pool, an outdoor diving well, an outdoor warm up pool and a main stage Olympic size pool. The savings to Lee County is an anticipated $1 million dollars per year.
The NSCC will pay $100,000 in rent to Lee County Government for the annual lease of the City of Palms Park.
