October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and GCST is doing it's part by selling a new swim cap with proceeds going to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, and Race for the Cure. Caps are $5.00 and very limited. Get yours today. We will have them available at the STAT meet and would like to see all of our swimmers in them.

Florida Swimming has awarded Savannah Bowser as the 11-12 Girls 2011 Short Course Swimmer of the Year. Blake Woodrow was awarded as the 13-14 Boys 2011 Long Course Swimmer of the Year. Congratulations to both swimmers on their hard work to achive these awards.

Heather Roka won the overall masters 2.5k race in 39.45. Vanessa Brewer finished 2nd in her age group in the 2.5k with a 56.13. Sam Moreland finished 6th in his age group with a 49.59. GCST has been awarded the bid to host the 2012 USA Swimming National Open Water 10k and 5k at Miromar Lakes in Ft. Myers, Fl on April 27th and 29th. The new dates for the Open Water Festival will 4/27-29/2012. GCST Coach Gregg Cross is the Event Director. We will have more information about this event soon.

Danny Whalen had an outstanding Ironman Triathlon in Augusta, GA on September 25 as he won the 18-24 age group. Danny has been training with GCST and improving his swimming part of the race as the results are showing. The race was a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike ride, and 13 mile run to finish the event, and Danny completed the course in 4:23:50. Florida Swimming has released the Final Top 10 Rankings for the 2010-11 Short Course, and Long Course seasons. GCST had 12 number one rankings, 25 Top 3 Rankings, and 89 total rankings in the Top 10 from 13 swimmers. The National Swimming Center Corporation (NSCC) is again asking the Lee County Board of Commissioners to go to contract for the swim center at City of Palms Park. This is an opportunity to support swimming while saving Lee County $1 million a year as Lee County Government struggles with a $50 million budget deficit. The NSCC is proposing turning the City of Palms Park, located in downtown Fort Myers, into a world class swimming facility.
